Running a business while solo parenting is no small feat, especially when your partner is deployed. The challenges are numerous, from handling the sudden increase in responsibilities to maintaining your own mental well-being. Over the years, I’ve learned several invaluable lessons about how to manage this unique balance while keeping relatively sane and yes, pushing the limits of caffeine 😉

Here are seven key insights that have guided me through these challenging times:

1. Establish a routine (but also allow space for flexibility)

Consistency is key, especially when you’re juggling business tasks with family responsibilities. Establishing a daily routine helps to create a sense of normalcy for both you and your children. It also allows you to carve out dedicated time slots for focused work, ensuring that your business does not suffer due to personal commitments.

2. Lean into technology

Technology has been a lifesaver in managing both my business and family life. From scheduling tools that help keep track of meetings and deadlines to communication apps that connect me with clients and my kids, integrating the right technology helps streamline my day-to-day tasks.

3. Set clear boundaries

It’s important to set boundaries between work and personal life. This means having clear work hours and communicating these to your clients and family – no matter how tricky it might feel. It helps prevent burnout and ensures that you are present for you, and your family when they need you most.

4. Outsource and delegate

Delegation has been crucial in maintaining my sanity. Outsourcing business tasks such as accounting or social media management frees up significant time that I can then spend with my children or on self-care. Similarly, don’t hesitate to ask for help around the house like getting a cleaner every now and then, getting the groceries delivered, having coffee on subscription..

5. Stay connected with your partner

Maintaining a strong connection with your deployed spouse can help manage the emotional challenges of solo parenting. Regular communication, when possible, helps you feel supported and less isolated. It also keeps your partner informed about home life, which can provide them comfort while away.

6. Prioritise you (+ your self care)

Self care is often the first thing to go during a deployment, but it’s essential for keeping your mental and physical health in check. Simple activities like reading a book, practicing yoga, or even spending an evening binge watching something once the kids are in bed can rejuvenate your spirit and improve your overall productivity.

7. Build a support network

Having a support network can make all the difference. Connect in with other military spouses or business owners who understand your lifestyle and can offer practical advice and emotional support. Local community groups or online forums can be great resources for building these connections.

Balancing business ownership with the demands of solo parenting during a deployment is challenging, but also deeply rewarding. Each of the lessons I’ve dealt with has not only helped me manage my business more effectively but has also enriched my personal life, providing me with skills and resilience that last well beyond the deployment period.
